FOOD, LAND AND FUEL
Welcome to this first issue of the TRENDNOVATION SOUTHEAST, a monthly platform for horizon scanning, focusing on emerging trends relevant to living alleviation and human development across the Southeast Asian region. Our main aim is to visualize emerging signals for change, at the same time building awareness and interest in such ‘megatrends’ among individual, opinion leaders, thinkers, researchers, planners, the private sector and the international development community.
TRENDNOVATION SOUTHEAST offers an intelligence-gathering tool to alert individuals and organizations to changing paradigms and help them respond early, rather than react late, to rapidly changing conditions outside their usual perspectives. We hope that this will provoke deeper analysis and lead to fresh insights and initiatives to improve the lives of Southeast Asia’s peoples.
We approach the task of trend monitoring from an integrated, cross-cutting perspective, using a variety of tools, including horizon scanning, foresight road-mapping, expert engagement, online Delphi surveys and content analysis. Though the units of analyses are the Southeast Asian region and its countries, the mental target for horizon-scanning and trend monitoring must always be the people themselves. The first questions we therefore ask are: what broad, long-term regional influences might affect people directly or indirectly? Then we ask what factors might affect individual countries, and the region as a whole. It is thus important to disaggregate the unit of analysis, as our ultimate goal is to secure information that will assist in effecting positive changes in human development.
Each issue of TRENDNOVATION SOUTHEAST has a thematic focus, and will contain short perspectives by respected Asia-based researchers, policymakers and practitioners in the fields of science, technology and innovation, and development planning. These short articles aim only to suggest ideas and provoke debate, and hopefully, action. The theme for this first issue, “Land, food and fuel”, introduces some of the dynamics and potential impacts of anticipated shifts in the balance in resource allocation in response to both intra-regional and global drivers.
Each issue will also contain an in-depth interview with a respected Asia-based expert in the field, starting this month with Prof. Dr. Richard Hames, a renowned futurist and intellectual. Prof Hames’ work as adviser to Heads of State and many of the world’s most innovative business leaders has helped reshape both policies and corporate agendas worldwide. Prof Hames has also authored several best-selling books.
Apart from this print edition, our website http://www.trendsoutheast.org offers an additional channel for electronic distribution and interactive communication among stakeholders. We warmly welcome your comments, opinions and suggestions on current or planned thematic areas.
TRENDNOVATION SOUTHEAST is published in Bangkok by the Noviscape Consulting Group, under the generous support of the Rockefeller Foundation, New York.
